Joe Johnson Gentry was born on June 9, 1892, in Jackson County, Tennessee. His parents were Simon L. Gentry and Mary Ann "Polly" Loftis.
Joe grew up to marry Dee Hensley. By 1920 27-year-old Joe and 25-year-old Dee were farming in Clay County, Tennessee, next door to the farm of his parents and two of his sisters. The couple continued to farm in Clay County the rest of Joe's life.
On March 5, 1946, Joe, age 53, left home to plow a field in a remote area called Poor House Ridge. He was followed to that field by two men Walter Dailey and "Little" Frank Brown. The two men erroneously thought that Joe had turned them into the police for operating an illegal moonshine still. The two men shot Joe from ambush as he was plowing and then stood over his body and shot him repeatedly. His murder was investigated by Deputy Shelby Nolan, Constable Raymond Barlow, and Sheriff Bryan Davis with the assistance of Jim Marable and his bloodhounds. The brutal murder was made famous when it was featured in a amagazine entitled Headquarters Detective in an article entitled "The Farmer Went Out Into His Field To Do His Spring Plowing." Dailey and Brown pled guilty and were sentenced to 50 years in prison. The magazine article ends with the following statement, "Thus was avenged the cowardly murder of Joe Gentry, whose one fault was that he was a staunch believer in law and order."
Joe was buried in Fitzgerald Cemetery, Celina, Clay County, Tennessee. His wife Dee never remarried. She died at the age of 60 on July 17, 1953, and was buried in Double Springs Cemeetery, Double Springs, Putnam County, Tennessee.
