Virginia was born on May 24, 1922 in Duluth, Georgia. She was raised on a large farm where the Gwinnett Place Mall area is now located. She attended Pleasant Hill Elementary and was in the graduating class of 1940 at Norcross High School. She would proudly tell you her class was the first class to have caps and gowns.
After high school, she worked for Bell Aircraft in Marietta, GA, then as W.W. II escalated, she went to Warner Robbins to work, then from there she was off to Washington, D.C. to work in the Pentagon, where she deciphered top secret codes for the military.
As the war winded down, Virginia returned to Atlanta, where she met the love of her life, N.H. Russell. Russell was still serving in the U.S. Army, so they wed at Conley Army Base. Their marriage was a union that lasted 63 years, produced six children, 20 grandchildren, and 21 great-grandchildren. When Virginia's youngest child started school, she returned to the working world going on to retire from Lockheed Martin Aeronautical in Marietta, GA.
She was a wonderful mother and grandmother, and an excellent cook specializing in southern cuisine. She could match clothes and furniture like no other. She loved winter time and Christmas was her favorite holiday. Virginia was known for her big heart and generosity. Virginia was a member of North Metro Baptist Church in Lawrenceville, formerly known as Pleasant Hill Baptist Church.
Virginia enjoyed traveling after her retirement. She traveled around the world four times visiting far away places like Bangkok, Thailand, where her son-in-law, Paul, is from. Virginia loved laughter and loved life. She leaves a legacy to be remembered and greatly missed by all who knew her.
Although God has gained a saint, she leaves behind to mourn her children, Faye & Stan Clayborn of Duluth, GA, Phyllis & Bill Laber of Buford, GA, Kaye & Ralph George of Woodstock, GA, Beverly & Paul Rungruang of Buford, GA, Richard & Sandy Russell of Buford, GA, and Pam & Jeff Thompson of Norcross; 20 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; sister, Charlotte & Bill Green of Duluth, GA; and brother, Frank & Louise Liddell of Lawrenceville, GA. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 63 years, N. H. Russell, loving parents, Mr. & Mrs. D.M. Liddell, sister, Ruth Seay, sister, Louise Welch, brothers, D.L. Liddell, Tom Liddell, and Harold Liddell.
Although this is not good-bye, only see you later. Gwinnett County is losing one of it's great southern belles, whom will be missed by many.
