Walter Elton Dowd, 89, passed away on March 15, 2012 after a period of failing health.
He was born on September 7, 1922 in Boston, Massachusetts the son of Thomas and Bertha (Davis) Dowd and attended schools in Boston; graduating from Roxbury Memorial High School, which was an all boys high school.
When he was twelve years of age, he met his future wife Florence, and loved her for the rest of his life. Walter and Florence Dowd married on September 4, 1941 and had many happy years together. They celebrated their 70th Wedding Anniversary at a luncheon with family members at the Olive Garden in Biddeford on September 4, 2011. The staff and many well-wishers made it a very special occasion for them.
Walter enlisted in the U.S. Navy on November 26, 1940 and served during World War II in many of the major sea battles of the Pacific and received several commendations. After he returned in 1946, he and Florence spent their life together raising their 8 children. They lived in Massachusetts, Maryland and finally retired to the home they built in Maine.
He is survived by his children that we so important in his life, Sharon King of Lyman, ME; Linda Gaudreau and husband William of Goffstown, NH; Donna Henderson of Norwell, MA; Bonnie Theriault and husband Rob of Manchester, NH; and Peggy Robbins and husband Carl, Sr. of Plympton, MA; also two sons, Walter, Jr. and Wayne Dowd. He leaves many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren that he enjoyed seeing at family gatherings in the summer.
He was predeceased by his wife Florence, who passed away on January 13, 2012; and also by his daughter, Pamela Nicholson of Rochester, NH.
A Funeral Service were held on Sunday, March 18, 2012 at 1:00 p.m. at the Autumn Green Funeral Home, 47 Oak Street, in Alfred, ME. Rev. Beverly Brent officiated. Mr. and Mrs. Dowd was buried together in the spring at Chadbourne Cemetery in Lyman.
The family would like to express their gratitude for the wonderful care provided for Walter at SMMC and by the entire staff at Southridge Rehabilitation & Living Center in Biddeford, Maine.
