Private graveside services for Mildred H. Zweifel Underwood, 97, Lawrence, will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Mrs. Underwood died Wednesday, March 15, 2006, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. She was born March 14, 1909, in Pomeroy, Ohio, the daughter of William Conrad and Emma Stivers Zweifel. She graduated from Liberty Memorial High School in Lawrence in 1927. She studied sociology at Kansas University for three years. Mrs. Underwood worked in the law, music and architecture libraries at KU until she retired in 1965. She was a member of Plymouth Congregational Church in Lawrence. She married Emery Hinckley Underwood on June 27, 1929, in Lawrence. He died July 22, 1948. Survivors include three daughters, Marlene Underwood and Joan U. Whitenight, both of Lawrence, and Nancy U. Coombs, Holton; 11 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. The family suggests memorials to Palliative Care in the skilled nursing facility at Lawrence Memorial Hospital, sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence.
