Orrin Cory French, 95, left this life Friday, April 29, 2005, at Aldersgate Village, where he had been a resident. He was born in 1910 at Newton, to Herbert A. and Maude M. French, one of 11 children. He attended public schools in Topeka, graduating from Seaman High School in 1928. He worked during the summer months from 1927 to 1933 in the Santa Fe Railway Signal Department until he graduated from Kansas University with a bachelors degree in electrical engineering. In 1934, he married Mary T. Croll. They moved to Chicago, where he worked as associate editor of Railway Signaling Magazine for two-and-a-half years. They returned to Topeka, where he worked as a draftsman and circuit analyst, then office engineer for the signal engineer system for the Santa Fe Railway. He worked for the Santa Fe in many different capacities until he retired in 1975. After that he served on several signal committees, as well as being a consultant for companies doing reconstruction on different train lines until 1987. Mary preceded him in death in February of this year. He is survived by three children, Mary Anne Michaud, San Antonio, Robert A. French, Hoschton, Ga., and Nancy E. Driscoll, St. Louis. He and Mary had 13 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. The grandchildren live in Georgia, Illinois, Kansas, Missouri, Texas, Virginia and Germany. Orrin was an active member of Kansas Avenue United Methodist Church for most of his life, serving in many leadership positions. He loved music and sang in the choir and played his violin for special services. A private burial will be in Rochester Cemetery. A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 7, at Kansas Avenue United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Good Samaritan Fund at Aldersgate Village, 7220 S.W. Asbury Drive, Topeka, 66614.
