92; formerly of New Albany
Funeral services for Jane Curtis, 92, of Tipton, will be 1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2011, at the Market Street Chapel of Seabrook Dieckmann & Naville Funeral Homes, in New Albany, with burial in SCI Graceland Memorial Park. She died Friday, Jan. 28, 2011, in Tipton, after a short illness.
Jane was the daughter of Joe and Hildreth Wright of New Salisbury, born on June 3, 1918. She was raised in Harrison County, where she graduated high school. She was a life-long New Albany resident until she and her husband, Victor, moved to Tipton in 2002. She held degrees from Indiana University and the University of Louisville, Bachelor's and Master's degrees respectively.
Jane married Victor Curtis on July 4, 1941. Victor passed away in October 2008.
Jane was an elementary school teacher (first grade) at Green Valley Elementary School for 30 years. She greatly enjoyed teaching and was devoted to her students. Jane retired in 1985. Jane and Victor were active members of Wesley Chapel Methodist Church. Upon their retirement, Jane and Victor traveled the world over, visiting more than 20 countries in Europe and Asia, as well as all the National Parks in America, and other places too numerous to mention. Jane had a thirst for knowledge and enjoyed learning about other cultures. She reveled in these experiences. She had an extensive collection of antiques and loved to entertain. She was uncommonly kind to all, friend and stranger.
Not one to concede to advancing age, Jane remained active until her passing. She continued to marvel at life and considered herself a "living history book." True to her Hoosier roots, she remained an enthusiastic basketball fan into her last hours. Jane and Victor attended 10 Final Fours with "nary" a ticket when they arrived and managed to get in nine of the 10 finals. Her most remarkable talent was the ability to "referee" from the couch. In her advancing age, she was often heard to remark about the referees "the game has passed them by." Really, Mother, you are 90!!
Survivors include a daughter, Vicki Curtis, and her husband, Bill, of Chicago, Ill.; one son, Vance Curtis, of Tipton; a niece "3rd kid" Sally Schroeder, of New Albany; a sister, Betty Jo Hedges, of California; and two "special" grandchildren: Josh Whitman and Justin Endres.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Dallas Wright.
The family would like to express their sincere appreciation for all involved in her senior/medical care: Caregivers, Esther Spivey, Jeff and Ramona Orbaugh, Carolyn Williams, Gina Edwards, and the staff at Autumnwood Village, Miller's Merry Manor, and Tipton Hospital, all of Tipton. Her medical care was superb. Many thanks to Dr. Mary Compton, Dr. Lori Wisely, of Tipton, Dr. Bechar, of Kokomo and Dr. Dennis Raridan and Dr. William Beeson, both of Indianapolis.
A loving mother and devoted wife, she was a beautiful woman, given to kindness and sacrifice, she deserves the blessings of God's holy rest.
Visitation at the funeral home will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 1 and from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesday.
The family requests expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to Wesley Chapel Methodist Church, the National Alzheimer's Association or your favorite charity.
