William Henry Holmes was born about 1845 to Isaac S. Holmes and Eliza Shaw (Gay) Holmes. He was the fifth of seven children. The four older children; Hannah, Eliza, Margaret and John; were born in New York. William and his two younger brothers, David and Albert, were born in Ohio. The family moved to Iowa County, Wisconsin about 1856.
William served in the Civil War. He enlisted on the 9th of September 1861 as a Private with the Wisconsin 6th Light Artillery Battery. William was mustered out on the 3rd of July 1865.
There is a monument at the Button Memorial Park in Lone Rock, Wisconsin with William Holmes' name on it.
William's younger brother, David O. Holmes also served in the Civil War. He died the 18th of October, 1864 in Memphis, Tennesee.
William was a civil engineer with a mining operation.
About 1882, William married Jennie (maiden name unknown) and had three children, all dying in infancy.
