John W. Borris, 59, was village president of Streamwood in 1972-73 and 1977-81, and helped lay the groundwork for community growth.
Mass for Mr. Borris, a resident of Streamwood, will be said at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Park Blvd. and Parkside Cir., Streamwood. He died at home Friday.
"When he had an idea or a principle, he stuck to it," said his son, John. "He did not back down. The late 1970s, when he was village president, were tough times for Streamwood. The...sanitary district refused to issue any more permits here. He fought for home rule and to prepare the village for the growth that followed in the 1980s."
Mr. Borris, a native of Chicago, moved to Streamwood in 1968 and was on a village commission three months later. He was elected village trustee and took over the presidency when the incumbent left Streamwood in 1972. He returned to his trustee position until 1977, when he was elected president. After his four-year term, he became liquor control commissioner.
In the Korean War, he served as a tank commander. He was a past American Legion commander for Logan Square Post 405 as well as the Sobel Post.
Mr. Borris worked from the 1950s to 1964 as an electrician-troubleshooter for Zenith Electric Co., and then worked 20 years for Arens Control Co. In 1984 he started Borson Co., to distribute water pump products. He most recently was an assistant manager for Zayre/Ames Corp.
In the 1970s, he served several years as coach for youth football teams, including the Streamwood Broncos and the Streamwood Packers. He was a Cubmaster in the 1960s for Pack 3088 in Chicago and a volunteer with the Boy Scouts.
Survivors, besides his son, include his wife, Marge; a daughter, Mariann Fusz; four grandchildren; and his mother, Mary.
