John Wilson Asher, 73, well-known Pemiscot county farmer and business man, died last Saturday, January 21, at Pemiscot County Memorial Hospital after a long illness of cancer.
Mr. Asher was born near Paris, Tenn., March 9, 1882, the son of William and Lula Asher, moving to Missouri at an early age. In 1907 he was graduated from Southeast Missouri State Teachers College at Cape Girardeau and for a few years taught in the Clarkton schools.
Later he went into business and ran a general merchandise store at Gibson for five years before moving to Caruthersville to engage in farming. He assisted in organizing and developing the Pemiscot-Dunklin Rural Electric Association and became it's first manager. In 1938 he returned to farming and became known over the area as a grower of certified sweet potatoes in cooperation with the Agriculture Department of Missouri University.
He served as a deacon in the Baptist church for more than 25 years and for many years taught a Sunday School class. He was active in church work until ill health caused his retirement.
On December 28, 1910, at Farmington, Mo., he was married to Miss Myrtle Gillespie, who survives.
He also leaves three sons, John W. Asher Jr., of Denton, Md., Phillip G. Asher, Falls Church, Va. and Kenneth D. Asher, Stockton, Calif.; one daughter, Mrs. Robert Harrison, Princeton, W. Va.; a sister, Mrs. R.A. Grimes, Flint, Mich.; three brothers, M.A. Asher, Athens, Texas, Newman Asher, Paris, France and Wayne Asher, Del Rio, Texas, also several grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at the First Baptist Church with the Rev. Guy Magee and Rev. Floyd V. Brower, of this city, and Rev. M.S. Lloyd of Hayti officiating. Burial was in Maple Cemetery with H.S. Smith Funeral Home service.
