I have been searching most of the day for the information you wanted on John Wesley Pettit and the others who died in the Bonanza mine. Do you perhaps know what the names of his children were? How did you know that his wife Julia Ann went to California? And that he had 7 kids?
In looking in our Funeral Home records I see the following:
Brown, John age 70 . Birnie Funeral Home handled him and sent his body to Lick Hill, Mo.
Drysdale, Robert age 45 buried in the City Cem handled by Birnie Funeral Home
Strickland, Ira age 35 buried in the City Cem handled by Birnie Funeral Home
Whittman, Paul R. age 38 buried in Motrose, Mo. handled by Birnie Funeral Home
Carr, Joe age 25 buried in the Catholic Cem by Putnam Funeral Home
Valcor, Mike age 34 buried in the Catholic Cem by Putnam Funeral Home(this could have been Mike Walkie)
Wish I could have found more.
William (W.D.) Moore - Born - August 25, 1878 - buried (White Bluff Cemetery), Fort Smith, Arkansas, Sebastian County, Just North of Bonanza (479) 646-4917

4 died from explosion, 6 died from no air.
1 December 2010 - Mrs. Sherry Woods of the Fort Smith Library found that Ira is listed as being burie by Birnie Feneral Home here (in Fort Smith) and buried in the "City Cemetery in Fort Smith. Or so the records say. Birnie Funeral Home does not list survivors. It does say that a George Henley paid for his funeral.
