Son of Dr. John Patrick Newman and Nora W. Flynt Newman of Macon, Georgia; grandson of Tillman (or Tilghman) Willis Flynt and Martha Jane (Turner) Flynt. He descended from the Fontaine-Maurys and the Poindexters of Virginia.
He was the second husband of Kate Coffman Mayhew Glover, whose first cousin Lena Angevine Warner studied nursing under Nora Flynt Newman's third cousin, Dr. Richard Brooke Maury (Jr). Lena was Dr. Maury's surgical nurse and lifelong friend. Dr. Maury's first cousin, and Nora Flynt Newman's third cousin, was General Dabney Herndon Maury.
Willis Newman moved from Macon in July 1908 to Bainbridge, Georgia, where he married Jeanette ("Jette") Octavia Hodge. They moved to Decatur, Georgia by 1910, to St. Louis by 1912, and to San Angelo, Texas by 1914 when their daughter Beulah died in Montgomery, Alabama. By 1918 he was living in Memphis where he was a clerk for the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company. In the 1920 census, he and Jett were shown in Atlanta, Fulton Co., GA., where he was the manager of an auto company and she an insurance agent. They rented a large house at 549 Forrest Avenue where they sublet rooms to seven lodgers. In 1930 he was a single man again in Memphis where he resided near Kate Mayhew Glover and her husband Charles at 256 Pine Street. Charles Glover died in 1930, and she continued to live there until she moved to 187 South Watkins Street in 1936. Willis Newman married Kate Glover in 1937 and moved into her home.
His commentaries on integration published in the Memphis Commercial Appeal (25 September 1955) are quoted in the book The lynching of Emmett Till: A Documentary Narrative (2002) By Christopher Metress, pp.146-47.
Willis Newman died at age 95 in Orlando, Orange Co., Florida 32805; (social security record). Social Security number 578-05-0299 issued in District of Columbia; last ss address of record, 32807 (Orlando, Orange, FL). Last benefit paid to 32805 (Orlando, Orange, FL).
