|Death: ||Feb. 28, 1843|
South Carolina, USA
Wife of Rev. James Burriss, founder of the First Baptist Church, originally Mt. Tabor, in 1817.
Said to have been of Irish origin.
Susan Burriss's burial was at Old Mount Tabor Cemetery, Orr Mills. One account states that her husband's grave (or headstone) was moved to the new location of the First Baptist Church, as the church's founder, when new highway construction was planned which would destroy the old cemetery. It is not clear whether Mrs. Burriss' grave or tombstone were moved.
It was said that she was completely illiterate until after her marriage and one of their sons taught her to read. Her knowledge of the Bible was so great that her husband frequently consulted with her when writing his sermons, and as many other ministers came seeking her opinions or advice as those of her husband.
They were buried at the OLD Mt. Tabor Baptist Church Cemetery, located at 1901 S. Murray Ave., Anderson, SC 29624.
Neither Rev. James Burriss nor his wife is buried at First Baptist; they were buried at the old Mt. Tabor Church on South Murray Ave., at that time described as "near Orr Mills." The church name changed to First Baptist later.
The original cemetery was destroyed by highway construction.
This cemetery was located where the Saluda Baptist Assn. Office is.
Rev. James Burriss' tombstone was moved to the new First Baptist Church, but his wife's wasn't, and the bones of both were left on South Murray Ave.
