He survived the cholera outbreak in Kane Co., IL that took his father and three of his siblings. His mother moved the family to Wisconsin where she re-married.

Alfred served in the Civil War. He enlisted on 25 Sep 1861 with Company H of the 8th Infantry Regiment of Wisconsin. He was mustered out on 16 Sep 1864. He received a pension for his effort in the Civil War.
