Howard Harold McFerrin, 89, of Great Falls, a lifelong educator who retired in 1975 from Great Falls Public Schools, died of cancer Sunday, Sept. 11, at Peace Hospice.
His memorial service is 11 a.m. Friday at Christ United Methodist Church, followed by a reception in the fellowship hall. Private burial with military honors and Masonic rites will be in Highland Cemetery. Croxford Funeral Home and Crematory is in charge of arrangements.
Howard was born June 13, 1922, in Great Falls. For most of his life, he lived within a couple miles of his first home, except for a few years after the war, when he and his young family lived in Cascade and Augusta.
Howard served during World War II in the Army Air Corps in the South Pacific. In 1946, he married the love of his life, June. They were married for 65 years.
Howard was a life member of the Masonic Lodge and member of both the Scottish Rite and the Demolay Legion of Honor, in addition to many other civic organizations.
His passions beyond family were education, gardening, hunting, fishing, and music - especially the saxophone.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by sons Michael and his wife, Felicity, of Canyon Ferry, and Gary and his wife, Marla, of Great Falls; daughter Joy and her husband, Walter, of Caledonia, Mich.; granddaughters Bryn and Brooke McFerrin; grandsons Greg McFerrin and Parker Grant; three great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
