Sarah Ann Givens Jones
Birth: Oct. 21, 1851
Mount Vernon
Posey County
Indiana, USA
Death: Jan. 31, 1939
Okanogan County
Washington, USA

Sarah was born on October 21, 1851 on the family farm near Mount Vernon, Indiana. Her parents were Jeremiah Cash and Sarah Eleanor ("Ella") Parks Givens. She had an older brother Charles Frederick who was born in 1849. She was a member of the Primative Bethel Baptist Church located at Farmersville, Posey County. In 1852 her parents sold their Posey County property and in the spring of 1853 Jeremiah joined the Givens families in the long journey by wagon train to California. His mother Rachel (Jones) Givens died of cholera in the Wyoming Territory and according to family tradition, his wife also died en route. We know very little about Sarah's early years until 1869 when at eighteen she married Robert Duckworth Jones at Mount Vernon, Indiana. He was her cousin, once removed. They boarded the second through transcontinental train to California on their honeymoon trip. They raised six children in Roseville: Henry Thomas, Margaret Ella, Elva Estella, Frank Elsworth, Mary Lenore, and Robert Duckworth, Jr. The family moved in 1888 to the Okanogan valley in Eastern Washington where they established a homestead on Salmon Creek near the mining hamlet of Ruby. Two more children were born into the family: William Forrest and Edna Grace (my mother). Her husband Robert died three years after they arrived in Washington Territory and left Sarah to face providing for a family of eight. For the next thirty years Sarah managed the 160 acre farm with the help of her older children. After selling the ranch, she moved with her daughter Edna to Okanogan. After Edna married Lewis St John and Sarah found it too difficult for her to maintain a home by herself, she lived with the St Johns her remaining years. She died at their home on January 31, 1939 after an extended illness. She is interred at the Spring Coulee Family Cemetery (Clover Cemetery) eight miles north of the town of Okanogan, Okanogan County, Washington. Her gravestone is next to that of her husband, two children and a nephew.
