SALT LAKE CITY - John Leslie (J. Leslie) Davis , at age 93, on July 26 made his final step to a better life and a happy reunion with his wife and family members. Leslie has battled the rigors of age for the past four years with grace and understanding. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him. His passing leaves an empty spot in our hearts and minds.
Leslie was born Sept. 30, 1910 at home in Venice, Utah to John Lorenzo and Florence Cowley Davis . He attended school in Venice Elementary, Richfield High School, Snow College, and BYU. He was the oldest of five sons and two daughters.
Leslie married Agnes Oldroyd , the love of his life, in the Manti Temple May 27, 1931. He taught Elementary school in Sevier County until 1954, when they moved to Salt Lake City. He taught in the Granite District until his retirement. He never stopped working, maintaining at least one summer or part time job along with his teaching. In his early years the family spent summers at Fish Lake where Les was employed by Fish Lake Resort. He pursued his love for fishing, hunting, and gardening until he was no longer physically able. He was active in the LDS Church and faithfully served in numerous capacities.
Leslie and Agnes had four children: Glenna Lee (Melvin) Bullock, Cedar City; Neil Leslie (Betty), Salt Lake City; Robert J. (Carol), Salt Lake City; and Nannette (Rob) Wangerin, Craig, AK. They have 10 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and six great-great-grandchildren.
Les is preceded in death by his wife Agnes , mother and father, brothers; Ellis, Reed, and Lawrence; son, Robert and great-grandson Nate Murie.
He is survived by his son Neil, daughters Glenna and Nannette; brother, Lynn H. (Ellen) Davis, Smithfield; sisters Gaye (Don) Seaman, Sholo, Arizona and Mary (Marcus) Jensen, Provo; sisters-in-law Ellen (Lawrence) Davis , Cedar City; Wilma (Reed) Davis ; and Betty (Ellis) Parker.
Funeral services will be held at noon on Saturday July 31, 2004 at the East Millcreek 11th Ward, 2702 Evergreen (27th E. and 35th So.). Friends may call Friday evening from 6-8 p.m. at Mountain View Memorial Estates, 3115 E. 7800 S. (Bengal Blvd.) and one and one half hours prior to services at the ward on Sat. for visitations. Interment, Mountain View Memorial Estates.
The family would like to extend a heart-felt thanks to the kind and compassionate staff at the CareSource Hospice where Les spent his last few days.
In Lieu of flowers the family suggest a donation to CareSource at 1624 E. 4500 S., Salt Lake City, UT 84117.
