"Stephen Baldwin was a farmer and a blacksmith. He moved to New Salem, KS, in 1909 with his wife and children and opened a blacksmith shop. New Salem was centered in a large wheat farming area. Cars were fairly new and most people had horses and wagons. There was much work for a blacksmith.
Stephen Baldwin was a kind man who loved his grandchildren and was always happy when they visited him. Your granddad loved to go to New Salem, where there was a big field to run and play in and barns to explore and hide in. The Baldwins had a large yellow and white Collie named Jack. Stephen enjoyed playing card games with his grandchildren. Stephen suffered a heart attack in Oct. 1946. Since there was no hospital in New Salem, he was taken by ambulance to nearby Winfield."
