Laura Ethel (Goodrum) Bailey, 85, of Walpole and Wildwood, Fla., died July 6, 2012, at her home after a period of failing health.
She was born in Westmoreland Jan. 3, 1927, daughter of Adam Clark Goodrum and Alice Mattie (Sullivan) Goodrum. She attended the one-room Depot School in Westmoreland, and graduated from Keene High School in 1943.
On March 3, 1962, she married David James Bailey, and they lived for many years in Westmoreland before moving to Walpole in 1996. After the move, they spent the summer months of each year in Walpole and traveled to Florida for the colder months.
Mrs. Bailey was a member of Westmoreland United Church and served as church financial secretary, treasurer, and on several committees for several years.
She particularly enjoyed her work as a member of the Westmoreland Town History Committee.
In later years, she became interested in genealogy and enlisted her husband's help in tracking down unknown cousins, his and hers, in the United States and Canada. They also traveled to England, Ireland and Scotland, motoring throughout the area to search from where ancestors had emigrated. Visits were made and many newfound cousins became wonderful friends. She managed to put all this information together and distributed it to both sides of the family.
Survivors include her husband of Walpole and Wildwood, Fla.; a sister, Virginia Benedict of Keene; and several nieces and nephews and their children. Several brothers and a sister all died earlier.
A graveside service will be held Tuesday at 10 a.m. at North Cemetery in Westmoreland. Friends are invited. Fletcher Funeral Home & Cremation Services of Keene is in charge of arrangements.
The family has asked that, in lieu of flowers, contributions be made in Mrs. Bailey's memory to Westmoreland United Church, 9 South Village Common, Westmoreland 03467.
