The following narrative was written by Marge Kermode Sillanpa on January 28, 2003:
Daniel David Abel, better known as Dan D. Abel, was a very tall man. As a farmer, he raised a nice garden that always had a row of sunflowers growing and corn, green beans, tomatoes, peas, carrots, lettuce, and beets. Wherever he moved, he always started grape vines. When seated at the dining table, he would always claim the largest glass of water. He loved his grandchildren and enjoyed having them around. When his grandchildren came to visit, he would always give them either a nickel or a Milky Way candy bar. In order to get your attention, he would break match sticks into pieces and toss them into your hair! One of his favorite sayings was asking if anyone wanted a bit of the staff of life. Then he would say, "Don't mind if I do," as he took a piece of bread. For many years, he rang the bell at the Mentor Methodist Church. He owned a large parcel of land from Route 84 and River Road to where the road curves to the left and heads east in Perry. He had a beautiful home and land and was a loving, kind, quiet, unassuming person. A great grandfather. I am so happy that he was my very own!" MKS
