J. R. "Jay" Darter, 68, of Atkins, died Tuesday, April 11, 2006, at St. Vincent Infirmary Medical Center in Little Rock. A son of the late Ira Lee and Evia Burris Darter, he was born November 28, 1937 in the Buttermilk Community near Appleton, Arkansas. He was retired from the United States Air Force, established Darter Brother Pallets in Atkins, and was, with his wife, Sue, the owner of Sue's Treasures in Atkins and former owner of 9 South Flea Market in Morrilton. He was also a member of the Military Vehicle Preservation Association. He was also preceded in death by an infant grandson, James Darter; an unnamed infant brother and an infant sister, Sarah Darter. Survivors include his wife, Sue Darter; four sons and daughters-in-law: Johnny and Debbie Darter of Centerville; Danny and Lorie Darter of Atkins; Billy and Margaret Darter of Lamar; and Tommy and Tammy Darter of Pottsville; a daughter, Evia Darter and her fiancee Steve Mullen of Dover; twelve grandchildren: Charity King of Centerville; H. W. Mills of London; Hope Darter of Centerville; Jon Darter of Atkins; Chere Harrison of Lamar; Eddie Darter of Atkins; Tara Darter of Morrilton; Kimberly Darter and Jennifer Darter, both of Pottsville; and Savanna Freeman, Matthew Freeman and Cassidy Mullen, all of Dover; a great-grandson, Samuel King of Centerville; and a host of other relatives and friends.

The funeral service will be at 10 A.M. on Friday at the Shinn Chapel, officiated by Rev. Henry Bateman. Burial will be in Tate Cemetery near Appleton, by Shinn Funeral Service.

Active pallbearers will be Paul Harliss, Glen Dunning, Eddie Wood, Dib Godbey, Harrel Brown and Major Ruddell. Honorary pallbearers will be Matt Childress, "Fat" Fryer, Jack Winchell, Glen Matchett and Jason Shaddon.

The family will receive friends on Thursday evening from 6 to 8 P.M., at the funeral home.
