She received her nursing degree from Emanuel Hospital in Portland, Oregon and worked as a registered nurse. After retiring, she received her master's degree in education from Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, Arizona. She worked at Vancouver Memorial in Vancouver, Washington and John C. Lincoln hospitals and in several Arizona schools.
She was a member of Hope Presbyterian Church in Rogue River in Oregon and the Community Church of Black Canyon in Arizona. She enjoyed singing and playing bridge and pinochle.
Survivors include three sons, David Cowie of Black Canyon, Arizona, Steven Cowie of Chandler, Arizona, and Gerald Cowie of Grants Pass, Oregon; a daughter, Joan Ford of Rogue River, Oregon; six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Anita, her first husband, Marshall Cowie, and her second husband, Izaias Freitas.
A memorial service was held at Calvary Church in Black Canyon City, Arizona, on March 4, 2001.
