Edith F. Huggins nee Allen
3-24-1930 Milledgeville IL / 11-17-2002 Aurora IL
Edith F. Huggins, age 72, of Sugar Grove, IL, IL, passed away peacefully and surrounded by her loving family at Provena Mercy Center, Aurora, early Sunday morning, November 17, 2002 after a courageous battle with cancer. She was born March 24, 1930 in Milledgeville, IL, the daughter of Denver LeRoy and Mildred Irene (Summers) Allen.
Edith was in the third grade when the family moved to Sugar Grove, IL, where she graduated as Valedictorian and went on to attend the Sterling School of Beauty Culture in 1948.
On October 9, 1949, she was united in marriage to Robert Alston Huggins at the Sugar Grove United Methodist Church. They made their home with relatives for a short time until 1952 when they moved to the present family home in Sugar Grove.
Edith proudly opened Edie's House of Beauty, on Labor Day, 1959. It was a profession she greatly enjoyed but it was second to her love of family and her zeal for politics and community. Even in the last days of her life, Edith mad sure she voted and was thrilled to see a Democratic victory in the last election of her life.
Edith was a member of the Sugar Grove United Methodist Church, the Aurora Township Women's Club and was a very active member of the Democratic Party and frequently wrote editorials for the Labor News. She helped start Girl Scouting in Sugar Grove and was active in the Kaneland Schools when her children were young. Edith had a quick wit, a good sense of humor and a great love for a good game of cards.
In addition to her husband Robert, she is survived by five children, Robert Allen (Diane) Huggins of Algonquin, IL and his family, Tracy Lynn (Scott) Fohrman and Kristy Ann (Dave) Niemiec (great-grandson, Jacob Robert), all of Algonquin, IL; Randall (Susan) Huggins of Montgomery, IL, Evelyn (Patrick) Hill of Aurora and her family, Marty J. Hill of Grapevine, Texas, Misty Rae (James) Owen (great-grandson, Cody James) of Aurora, Megan Irene Hill and Timothy Henry Hill, both of Aurora; Elizabeth Faye "Betsy" (Thomas) Anderson of Hampshire, IL, and Russell A. "Rusty" (Laura) Huggins of Aurora, and his son, Nicholas Robert Huggins.
She now joins her mother, Mildred Wollwert; her father, Denver Allen; her step-father, Matt Kiefer and "Uncle Pete", who preceded her in death.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, November 19, 2002 from 3PM - 8PM at the Sugar Grove United Methodist Church, 176 Main St., and Wednesday morning from 9:30AM until time of service. Funeral Services will be held at church Wednesday, November 20, 2002 at 10:30AM. The Rev. Steve Good will officiate and interment will follow at Sugar Grove Cemetery.
Memorials in her name may be made to the Sugar Grove United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 226, Sugar Grove, IL 60554.
