Melvin Motor - Oct 1920
Frederick J. Beck was born 8-2-1846, at Steigniz, Province Posen, Germany. He came to this country with his father and stepmother, his mother having died when he was a baby, in 1853. Their first home was Chicago. Later he started farming in the neighborhood of Melvin, and ever since he has been a citizen of this community. The deceased was married in 1871 to Miss Matilda Klatt. Ten children were born to this union, three of whom preceded the father into eternity. On 2-14-1893 his wife preceded him to the better world. The year following he married Mrs. Lena (Angelina Lena Rock) Oltman, formerly Miss Rock, his surviving widow. This union was blessed with one daughter. About eleven years ago he took very sick and ever since his health has been impaired. In early summer this year he became very sick and there was very little hope for recovery at that time, but he recovered and was able to take care of his store again. But only for a short span of time, it was simply the last flicker of life's dying embers. At 4:20 p.m. 10-26-1920, the end came. Mr. Beck was one of the old pioneers who have done their share to make our country and especially our great state of Illinois, what it is today. He has lived 50 years in this community, the last 15 years in the town of Melvin. He was highly respected by his fellow citizens, who showed their opinion of him by making him County assessor and town clerk in which capacities he served for a number of years; he has also taken a very active part in church work especially in his younger days. Good many years has he served as member of the church council of his local Lutheran Church. Mr. Beck was of quiet and reserved nature, much talking was not his business. And still he will be missed by many, chiefly by those who knew him best. He has well filled the place assigned to him in this world. May he now find rest in the world beyond. The deceased has reached the age of 74 years, 2 months, 24 days. He leaves to mourn his departure, his wife, 3 sons, Arthur, John and Henry of Melvin; 5 daughters, Mrs. Emma Stienke of Chicago; Mrs. Amanda Dixon of Buckley; Mrs. Minnie Reehl, Mrs. Erna Groen, Miss Ella at home; 13 grandchildren, 1 great-grandchild, 2 step-sons and 2 step-daughters, 2 half-brothers, Lew Beck of Melvin and Henry Beck of Jackson ?; 1 half sister, Mrs. Isaac Thompson of Melvin and a number of other relatives and friends. Short funeral services were held from his late residence Thursday and later at the Lutheran Church, Rev. Wm. Schumacher officiating; interment was made in Melvin cemetery. Those from a distance who were present at the funeral were, Mrs. Stienke and sons, Herbert and William, and Herman Oltmans all of Chicago.
