WASHINGTON, IL – Karl C. Bertsche, 90, of Washington, died at 7:20 am Wednesday, February 14, 2007 at his residence.
Born on October 11, 1916 in Peoria, IL to John and Mary Singer Bertsche, he married Ann Leiser on September 6, 1947. She died in August of 1978. He later married Edith Watson on December 28, 1980. She survives.
Also surviving are 1 daughter, Mary Katherine Bertsche of Peoria, IL, 1 stepson, Robert (Sharon) Watson of Bartonville, IL and 1 stepdaughter Janice Watson of El Paso, IL, 8 step-grandchildren and 10 step-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by 1 son John Edward Bertsche, 1 sister and 1 brother.
Karl was a member of the Civilian Conservation Corp from 1934-1940. He later worked at Hiram Walker Distillery in Peoria. He retired from the State of Illinois in March of 1984. He was a former member of St. Thomas Catholic Church in Peoria Heights until 1980. He then was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Peoria until 2000, where he was active in the St. Vincent DePaul Society. He later became a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Washington. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Fr. John Menco Council #6707 in Washington, where he was awarded the Knight of the Month Award several times. He also was a member of the 4th Degree Knights of Columbus Spalding Assembly in Peoria.
A funeral mass will be at 10 am Saturday, January 17, 2007 at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Washington. The Rev. Joseph P. Donton will officiate. Visitation will be from 9-10 am Saturday at the church. A graveside service will be at 12:30 pm Saturday at Roanoke Township Cemetery in Roanoke. Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children's Hospital or St. Patrick's Catholic Church.
