Helen Frances Scherzer Ballard, 72, Bardstown, died Saturday, December 29, 2007, at University of Louisville Medical Center. She was born December 20, 1935, in Louisville. She attended Ursuline College and received a degree in medical technology. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Joseph Parish. She was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur & Mary Jenerose Brown Scherzer; two brothers, Edward Scherzer and Arthur "June" Scherzer; and a sister, Kathryn Braun. Survivors include her husband of 48 years, Joseph Leslie Ballard, Jr.; three sons, Christopher Joseph "Chris" Ballard, Georgetown, Nicholas Ballard, Bardstown, and Victor Ballard, Louisville; two daughters, Angela Ballard, Bardstown, and Mary Beaven, Georgetown; four grandchildren; a brother, Norbert Scherzer, Louisville; and four sisters, Mary Sullivan, Eagle Lake, FL, Elizabeth Greenwald, Rita Oppel, and Marge Arehart, all of Louisville; and several nieces and nephews. The funeral was 11 a.m. Monday at the Basilica of St. Joseph Proto-Cathedral with burial in St. Joseph Cemetery. The Rev. Joseph Batcheldor officiated. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to the American Cancer Society. Mann & Greenwell Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

The Mass of Christian burial for Helen Frances Scherzer Ballard, 72, Bardstown, was 11 a.m. Monday, December 31, 2007, at the Basilica of St. Joseph Proto-Cathedral with interment in St. Joseph Cemetery. The Rev. Joseph Batcheldor officiated with Deacon Sam Filiatreau assisting. Pallbearers were Marvin Mattingly, Norbert Oppel, Paul Oppel, Rick Borders, Frank Scherzer and Eddie Scherzer. Mann & Greenwell Funeral Home Inc. was in charge of arrangements.
