Samuel was a cousin.
He was the son of Jacob CAPLE and Sarah Ann GHERY.
His first wife was Polly Sumpter. They had two children together: Minnie E. and Milo J. CAPLE.
His second wife was Margaret M. RAGSDALE who he married on September 16, 1877, in Brookline, Greene Co., MO. Their children together were: Samuel Hugh, Ida V., Beartle, Joseph Edwin, William Roy, Richard Jordan Lewis, Lida Lenora, and Harry CAPLE.
Samuel moved to Jasper Co., IA in the 1850's with his family.
He served in the Civil War as part of the Iowa Infantry and Calvery. Military service: between 1863-1865, Iowa 5th Infantry and Cavalry. Family lore says that he was a prisoner in the south's Andersonville Prison. No documentation has been found to support these stories. However, they were passed down through more than one branch of the family. A newspaper article about him shortly before his death also states he was a prisoner of war.
Samuel was a diabetic in his later years.
Cause of death - Complications of gangrene of the leg.
