The son of Atwell David and Prudence Rae, Elwood married Mary Penny about 1876. They were the parents of 7 children.

Elwood was the founder of E. F. David Moving Company. He worked as a house mover with several of his sons and sons-in-law in St. Louis, Missouri.

At the time of his death, Elwood was 72 years, 3 months and 15 days old. He was buried on 07 Jul 1919 and was survived by his wife. Mary passed away in 1921.
