Richard Ralph Garriott, retired U. S. Navy Commander, died Tuesday, December 31, 1996 in Norfolk, VA. Born in Oldham County, he was the son of the late R. E. Garriott and Nancy Staten Garriott. He had retired from the U. S. Navy after 30 years of service. Following his naval career he was deputy clerk of Virginia Beach Circuit Court for 16 years. He and his wife were founding members of Holland Road Baptist Church in Virginia Beach. He had served as a deacon and as finance chairman. He was a 41 years member and past president of Kempsville Ruritan Club. Comdr. Garriott served in the Pacific during the entire Second World War. He was twice awarded the Bronze Star as well as Victory Medal and Good Conduct Medal with two stars. Survivors include: his wife of 60 years, Mildred Coleman Garriott; two sons, Richard and Michael Garriott of Virginia Beach, VA; five grandchildren and one great granddaughter. He was preceded in death by a brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Garriott of Mercer County. Funeral services were conducted January 3, at Holland Road Baptist Church by Rev. R. F. Pittman. Burial, with military honors, was in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens, Norfolk, VA. Graveside services were led by his pastor, a nephew-by-marriage, C. D. Ransdell, and the naval chaplain.
