Henry F. Burgess, 82, a Capac resident for 45 years, died unexpectedly Thursday evening (March 7, 1991) a few hours after admission to Yale Community Hospital. He was the son of Guy and Mary Wilson Burgess, born May 2, 1908, in Corona, Calif.
He and Marie Falklam were married in Port Huron on March 30, 1932.
Mr. Burgess devoted his working life to education. He attended Michigan Normal (Eastern Michigan University), Ypsilanti, where he received his teaching certificate; then attended Michigan State University to receive his bachelor and master's degree in education. He taught vocational education in Saline (1934), Reese, North Branch and Capac schools (1945 and founded its FFA) He also was superintendent of schools at Reese; high school principal (1951-1953), elementary principal (1958-66), middle school principal(1967-71) at Capac schools. He retired from Capac school system in 1973. He served as district and state chairman of Retired School personnel.
Mr. Burgess was past president of Capac Lions Club; past president of St. John's Lutheran Church Congregation and was a choir member and active in the Lutheran Brotherhood.
Surviving are his wife Marie of 59 years; a son William and daughter-in-law Marion of Capac; daughter and son-in-law Lois and George Dentel of Ann Arbor and daughter Janice Kimbro of Washington; 11 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; brothers Fred, Robert, Eugene, Howard and James and nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services were held Monday at St. John's Lutheran Church, Capac, with burial in the Lutheran Cemetery. The Rev. Scott McLean, pastor, officiated. Pallbearers were Charles Dentel, Austin and Ken Burgess, Scott Taylor, Scott Treet, and Ray Porter.
Memorials are suggested to St. John's Lutheran Church Memorail Fund, Capac Lions Club or Henry Burgess FFA Scholarship Fund at Capac Schools.
