Betty Jean (Tollefson) Dague died Sept. 3, 2007, at home in Phoenix, Ariz. She was born Sept. 17, 1927, to Ole and Isabel (Ostrem) Tollefson on the family homestead near Hitchcock, S.D. She would have been 80 this month.
She married Dale Dague on Christmas Eve 1948 in Huron, S.D. She and Dale had 13 children; the first 12 were born in South Dakota, but Darold, the youngest, was born in Salida.
The family lived in Salida from January 1966, until she and Dale moved to Phoenix for warmer climate in January 1985.
While living in Salida, she was busy raising her large family and later her grandchildren. She loved flowers, baking, and visiting with family.
She was active in Miriam Rebekah Lodge. For a time she worked as an aide at Salida Hospital, usually working with the elderly.
When Columbine Manor opened and elderly residents were moved from the hospital to the new facility, she was called upon numerous times to assist with agitated individuals she'd formerly cared for.
Her calmness and her true caring heart won over many individuals. Her smile and soft voice calmed everyone during trying times.
After moving to Phoenix, she worked at a nearby Fry's Store until she retired. She was well known in her neighborhood as the cupcake lady. Local youngsters enjoyed her baking as much as her children and grandchildren.
As the baby of the Tollefson family, she was nicknamed Babe by her many relatives. Hearing their grandmother called Babe, tickled many of her grandchildren.
Her family celebrated her 80th birthday in Salida when she returned to attend the May graduations of grandchildren Loni Dague and Brent Archuleta, and great-grandson, Scott Wilkins.
It was then she met her first great-great-granddaughter, Adrianna Nevaeh Wilkins.
Survivors are her children, Shirley (Aubrey) Lambert of Salida, Doyle (Earlene) Dague of Pueblo West, Dallas (Nevin) Dague of Owensville, Mo.; Bruce Dague of Phoenix, Boyd (Tanya) Dague of Salida, Sheila (Ken) Kapelke of Thornton, Gayle Dague of Phoenix, Dennis Dague of Iola, Wis., Norma Thomas of Phoenix, Lonnie Dague of Pueblo, Lori Dague (Dario Archuleta) of Saguache and Darold Dague of Greeley; 24 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, one great great-granddaughter, and a great-great-grandchild due any day; sisters-in-law, Faye Zerfoss, Agnes Dague and Deloris Dague; brothers-in-law, Burton Sargent, Iven Jacobson and Clyde Binger; many nieces and nephews and many friends who still live in the Salida area.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Dale; her daughter, Sherry Wilkins; her parents; and her 10 siblings.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sept. 15, 2007, at Lewis and Glenn Chapel in Salida. Interment will at Fairview Cemetery, Salida.
Anyone who wants may make contributions in her name to the American Cancer Society or any charity of their choice. She was a cancer survivor after a long struggle during 1971.
