Eric J. Phillips Jr. PHILLIPS, Eric J. Jr., 86, passed away at home in Sun City Center, Fla., Saturday, January 17, 2009, after a lengthy battle with cancer. Mr. Phillips was born June 14, 1922, in Philadelphia, Pa. He graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in Camden, N.J., prior to entering the U.S. Coast Guard. in World War II, where he served in the North Atlantic Fleet on the U.S.S. General Greene. Upon his honorable discharge, he moved to Flint, Mich., to make a home with his bride, Jacqueline G. Knapp. After working on the assembly line at Buick Motor Division for two years, he returned to Philadelphia to attend Temple University, where he received his baccalaureate degree in chemistry/metallurgy in June 1952. In 1954, he became employed by Chevrolet Motor Division, rising to the position of chief metallurgist of Chevrolet Manufacturing in Flint. He was also employed by General Motors International Division in Saltillo, Mexico, 1980-82. After his retirement, he and Jacque resided in Ormond Beach, Fla. He was remarried in 1997 to Shirley L. Funk. He lived in Sun City Center from 2005 until the time of his death. He was also the past president of Trinity Lutheran Church of Fenton, Mich., and the president of the Fenton Tigers Athletic Boosters Club. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jacqueline G. (Knapp) Phillips. He is survived by his four children, Dian M. McConnel of Caseville, Mich., Mark E. Phillips of Kalkaska, Mich., David F.(Jill) Phillips of Cumming, Ga., and Dawn C.(Jeffrey) Fischer of Frankenmuth, Mich.; and 10 grandsons, Gregory B. (Kim) Fowler, David R.(Jamie) Higgins, Andrew S. Phillips, Shaun P. Phillips, Dylan W. Phillips, Cole M. Phillips, D. Christian Phillips, M. Tyler Phillips, Eric J. Phillips, III and Ian P. Fischer; and one great-granddaughter, Charlotte J. Fowler. He was preceded in death by his sister, Violet Keogh of Niagara Falls, N.Y. He is also survived by his siblings,Rose Sporer of Sicklerville, N.J., David G. Phillips of Menominee Falls, Wis., and Minabess Randolph of Toms River, N.J., and many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his ex-wife and dear friend, Shirley Phillips of Sun City Center, Fla. The family will receive visitors 2-5 p.m. Thursday, January 22, at the chapel of the Zipperer Funeral Home, 1520 33rd St. SE, Ruskin, FL-33570. Funeral services will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday, January 24, at Haigh-Black Funeral, 167 Vining Court, Ormond Beach, FL 32176. Internment will immediately follow at Volusia Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Ormond Beach.
