Rebecca was born to Samuel Crawford and Mary Harris Long Crawford in Jasper County, GA. Rebecca's parents had come with settlers from Abbeville, SC to Jasper County where they married in 1811. Samuel died in Jasper County and his grave site is currently unknown. Mary Harris Crawford continued west with her children and was living with several of them in Talladega AL when she died; she is buried in the family cemetery there.

Emory's parents are buried in Jasper County. When Emory attained adulthood, he "crossed the river" to Butts County where he acquired land for himself near Stark (present day area near this cemetery and near Lloyd Shoals Dam).

A tribute to Rebecca Reid Maddux in "Trailing Our Ancestors" by Lois McMichael (1994) reads: "She was a very active member and a splendid worker in the Methodist Church. Rebecca studied her Bible and it was said she could preach sermons equal to a minister. As a neighbor she was loved and respected; as a mother kind and indulgent... She died at her home of her daughter Mary Louisa Harper. Mary Louisa was sick and "Granny Becky" as she was affectionately called by her grandchildren, had gone to see her daughter. She became ill and died before she could be carried home." Sadly, her daughter Mary Louisa died about a month later and is buried near her parents. A number of descendants carry the "Reid" in their names that came down from Rebecca's ancestors in Pennsylvania and Abbeville, SC. Many descendants are buried in Abbeville; surnames are Reid, Crawford, Montgomery, Long, and Harris. They were affiliated with Rocky River Presbyterian Church and with Lower Long Cane Presbyterian Church in the Long Cane area of Abbeville County.

In addition to the children linked on this page, Emory and Rebecca Maddux had a son who died as a toddler and is buried near the graves of his parents in this cemetery: Samuel Emory Maddux.
