Robert F. Reeves - A former Confederate with Company D 52nd Regiment, Virginia Infantry. He was with Ewell's Corps; Early's Division; Smith's Brigade at the Gettysburg campaign. Company D was known as the "Harper Guard" (Note: Robert F. Reeves was the younger brother of Peachy Harrison Reeves who also was in Company D 52nd Regiment, Virginia Infantry and who also was in Company G of the 3rd Maryland Cavalry) Confederate CMSR's report Robert F. Reeves as enlisting on March 13, 1862 at Allegheny Mountain, (West) Virginia for the duration of the War. Confederate CMSR's report him as absent without leave and as having a court martial much like his brother Peachy and fined and list him as deserting on July 14, 1863 and supposed as being captured at Williamsport, Maryland. Federal POW records report him being on a list of deserters and prisoners sent from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on July 22, 1863 and report him as being a prisoner at Williamsport, Maryland and as giving up. Federal POW records report him as a prisoner during the Gettysburg campaign and as being desirous of joining the Union Army and being transferred to the 3rd Maryland Cavalry at Fort Delaware and of having special orders from Secretary of War; Edwin M. Stanton for allowing former Confederates to join the Federal Army and told Union authorities he had been conscripted into the Confederate Army and had been born in Virginia. 3rd Maryland Cavalry CMSR's list him as being originally in Company G and enlisting on September 18th and mustered into service on September 24, 1863 (the same as his brother Peachy Reeves) at age 21 and list his physical description (regimental descriptive list) as hazel eyes; light hair; light complexion; 5' 7 and one half inches in height and told 3rd Maryland Cavalry authorities he had been born in Augusta County, Virginia and had been a farmer prior to the War and signed his name as Robert F. Reeves. 3rd Maryland Cavalry CMSR's report him being promoted to Corporal on November 30, 1863. According to Company muster roll history Company G 3rd Maryland Cavalry started embarking on the steamer from Camp Schenck near Baltimore, Maryland on January 3, 1864 and set sail on the steamer "Empire City" on January 6, 1864 for New Orleans, Louisiana and arrived on January 16, 1864. Records also state that there was one case of small pox on board and that the company also lost eight horses while at sea. 3rd Maryland Cavalry CMSR's reflect him as having a good service record. 3rd Maryland Cavalry CMSR's report him as being transferred to Company K due to the consolidation of the regiment to battalion strength on December 9, 1864 (just like his older brother Peachy and also allowed to keep his rank) 3rd Maryland Cavalry CMSR's report him as being discharged at Vicksburg, Mississippi on September 7, 1865. (Note: According to the History and roster of Maryland Volunteers, War 1861-5 prepared by under the authority of the General Assembly of Maryland his name is carried in the roster of Company G and listed as being transferred to Company K and being discharged on September 7, 1865) Robert F. Reeves filed for a Federal pension on November 12, 1891 and used Company G and Company K of the 3rd Maryland Cavalry as his units. His widow filed for pension but was not dated however it is assumed that she filed shortly after his death in 1908. According to the United States Census, 1850 he was living in the household of Elizabeth and William Reeves in Augusta County, Virginia. According to the United States Census, 1900 he was living with his wife Elizabeth L. Reeves in Somerset, Pennsylvania. Robert F. Reeves' parents were William R. Reeves and Elizabeth Wine)
