John Newton Congleton was born on Sep 12, 1808, in Nicholas County, Kentucky, to parents William Walker Congleton, born in Kentucky (1788-1831) and Mary "Polly" Rule, born in Pennsylvania (1785-1831).
John was the oldest child in a family of seven known children. His brothers and sisters were: America Congleton-Caldwell (1812-1850); Margaret Congleton-Champ (ca 1814-1880);, William Henry Congleton (ca 1817-1834); Elizabeth T. Congleton-Colliver (1820-1875); Columbus Walker Congleton (ca 1827-1897); and Franklin E. Congleton (1829-1852).
In the 1830s, John married Malvina D. McIntire, born in Kentucky (1808-1878). Malvina was a daughter of John S. McIntire (1760-1826) and Elizabeth Howard (1783-1856), both born in Kentucky.
John and Malvina settled into a life of farming in Mt. Sterling, Montgomery, Kentucky. They did not have any children of their own, but the couple assisted in the education of twenty-five of their nieces and nephews.
Both John and Malvina are buried in Machpelah Cemetery.
