Birth: Dec., 1864
Jackson County
Kansas, USA
Death: Jul. 24, 1953
Clallam County
Washington, USA

Dixie Waynant was the daughter of Cyrus Waynant and Catherine Little. Her year of birth is somewhat of a mystery since it varies from census to census. The most likely date seems to be about Dec 1864, and that is consistent with her age on her death certificate

Dixie married Moses Lyman Barber 20 May 1891 in Kansas City, MO. (Moses Barber of South Kingstown, RI and Many Descendants, Lois Schroeder, 1984, page 84). They had a daughter, Mary Katherine, born 15 Oct 1892. At that time they were probably living in or near Gonzales, TX where Moses and his brother, Gardner Clark, and his father, Stillman, farmed and traded.

Sometime around 1897, Stillman Barber and Moses Lyman Barber and families moved to a 5000 acre ranch near Roby in Fisher County TX. Tragically, Moses died in 1898 at age 39.

Dixie's mother, Catherine, died in 1900. The 1900 census found Dixie and Katherine living with her father, Cyrus, and her siblings in the family home KS. Cyrus died in 1904.

Dixie was a school teacher. In 1905, the South Dakota state census found her teaching at the Rigg's Institute in Flandreau, SD. This is still in operation as the Flandreau Indian School. Daughter, Katherine, remained in KS and lived with Dixie's brother and sister.

Stillman Barber died in 1907. As his only living descendant with the Barber surname, Katherine is mentioned in Stillman's will.

In the 1910 census, Dixie was living in Rosebud Montana on the Crow Indian Reservation. Perhaps she was teaching here as well. By 1920, she returned to KS to live with her brother, Jefferson.

Dixie spent the last years of her life in Washington State. The 1940 census found her living with her daughter, Katherine, and her husband, Richard A. McGrew and their young son.

Dixie passed away 24 Jul 1953 (death certificate). Dixie's remains were returned to KS to be buried in the same cemetery as her parents.
