Funeral services for Roy A. "Bob" Lawson, 85, Baldwin City, will be at 10:30 a.m. today at First United Methodist Church in Baldwin City. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery.
Mr. Lawson died Wednesday, Oct. 22, 2008, at the Baldwin Care Center.
He was born Dec. 27, 1922, in Vinland, the son of Wesley Eugene and Crilla Belle McQueen Lawson Snow. He attended Stony Point grade school and Vinland High School. He moved to the Blackjack area in 1946 and then to Baldwin City in 1983.
Mr. Lawson served in the U.S. Navy from Jan. 1, 1943, until he was discharged Oct. 26, 1945. He spent his entire military service in the South Pacific during World War II aboard the USS Bunker Hill aircraft carrier.
He and his wife farmed in the Blackjack area for 37 years. He served for many years on the Douglas County Free Fair Board and Douglas County Soil Conservation Board. He also helped with the Maple Leaf Festival in Baldwin City for many years.
Mr. Lawson was a member of First United Methodist Church in Baldwin City and a life member of Handyman Club, CY17 Bunker Hill Association and Kansas Veterans of Foreign Wars. He enjoyed making wooden toys and sunflowers and also volunteered with Habitat for Humanity and Neighbors Helping Neighbors.
He married Jean Clarridge on July 11, 1945, at First United Methodist Church in Baldwin City. They shared 63 years of marriage. She survives, of the home.
Other survivors include three daughters, Sharon Cleavinger and husband J.D., Lawrence, Shirley Comer and husband John, Independence, Mo., and Sally Arnold and husband Ron, Baldwin City; two brothers, Leland Lawson, Eudora, and Tom Snow, San Diego; a sister, Joyce Snow Way, Colorado Springs, Colo.; seven grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
Mr. Lawson was preceded in death by two brothers, Jerry Snow and Murray Lawson; and an uncle, Glenn McQueen.
