Dr. George H.Irwin was born in Mifflin County, Pennsylvania in January, 1812 the son of Major John Irwin and Sarah Maclay. He began his medical career studying medicine with Dr Edmund Burke Patterson, who was his brother in law and Dr.Joseph B. Ard of Lewistown. In 1834 he continued his studies at the University of Pennsylvania, graduating 1n 1836. His first proffesional practices were in Huntingdon County as well as Penns Valley, Pennsylvania in Centre County.
In 1854 Dr.Irwin moved his family to Lodi, Wisconsin where he practiced privatly until the start of the Civil War, He enlisted in Capt. Mansfield's Company "G," 2d Wis and was appointed hospital steward before the regiment left camp Randall. He was wounded by a pistol shot across the forehead at the first Battle at Bull Run a wound that he never fully recoverd from. He was commissioned assistant surgeon by Wisconsin Governor Randall and continued in
service till the spring of 1862 when he resigned and resumed his profession at Lodi,
