Bartlesville Newspaper Article, February 24, 1967:
Woman Born 93 Years Ago Will Celebrate Birthday
One of Bartlesville's pioneer residents, Mrs. Vesta Murphy of 2001/2 N. Morton, will celebrate her 93rd birthday this weekend. The date actually falls on Saturday but she will celebrate it on Sunday so that she may be joined by family and friends. Mrs Murphy, whose maiden name was Vesta Garner, was born in 1874 in Wilson County, Kansas, and came to the Bartlesville area with her family in 1888. "There was only one store here then", she explained, "It was run by Mr. Johnstone and Mr. Keeler. The Indians wore blankets and rode ponies bareback. They were Osages. The reason my parents moved to what was then Indian Territory was that they had an old rocky farm in Kansas and an uncle was doing real good here, so he persuaded my parents to come here. It was a downfall for us kids though, as there was no more education for us". Mrs. Murphy explained that there were no free schools for the white children, only subscription schools which charged $1.00 a month to attend. "Not many could pay that much", she said, "So I stayed home and helped my mother with the younger children. I had two brothers and five sisters, including two sets of twins. Two of her sisters are Mrs. Harry Cox and Mrs. Walter Geary, who live in California. Her marriage to Marion F. Murphy took place in 1891 at Claremore. Her husband is now deceased. She is a member of First Presbyterian Church. Her health is good despite her age, with the exception of her eyesight which has failed to the point where she can only see light and dark and some movement. She moves with a sure step around her little house, though, and occasionally walks over to her son's house. Her son is Aaron (A.L.) Murphy, long-time real-estate broker, who is 74 himself. She also has two daughters nearby, Mrs. Wilbur Malone of Bartlesville and Mrs Jesse Chism of Tulsa. They all plan to help her celebrate her birthday. Mrs. Murphy's other five children are deceased. She has 14 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and 19 great-great grandchildren. Friends are invited to call on Mrs. Murphy Sunday at any time during the afternoon.
