Olive Christian was born September 2, 1918 in Howell, Missouri and departed this life on July 25, 2010 at the Holden Manor in Holden, Missouri at the age of 91 years, 10 months and 23 days. She was the daughter of Price and Martha Myrtle (Hooten) Stiger. The Stiger family left Howell when Olive was about two years old and lived several places in Missouri during Olive's younger years.
In 1932, however, the family settled in Johnson County, Missouri. It was here that Olive met and was courted by a young man named Lawrence E. Christian on March 19, 1938, Olive and Lawrence were united in marriage in Pleasant Hill, Missouri. This was a union that would last for 54 years, until Lawrence's passing on March 20, 1992. Olive had the unique combination of an indomitable spirit and faith – failure wasn't a word in her vocabulary - it led to many experiences which those of lesser character would have been afraid to try. During World War II, Olive worked as a welder in a shipyard in Antioch, California. After her first two children were born, she took a job cooking for railroad workers. That may not sound hard until you factor in that the cooking was done in an un-air-conditioned railroad car on a wood-fed stove in the California heat. The floor of the railroad car was so rough that she was afraid to put her children down to play, fearing they would get splinters, so she held them in her arms while she cooked!
After Olive and Lawrence returned to Missouri, she worked for Royal Manufacturing in Holden. They also owned and operated Christian's Dari In and from 1969-1974 owned and operated Christian Liquors in Kingsville.
After selling the liquor store, Olive went to work as a seamstress for King Louie in Pleasant Hill, retiring in 1980. In addition to these endeavors, Olive also worked for many years on a farm faithfully alongside Lawrence.
Olive was a long time member of the Kingsville Baptist Church in Kingsville, Missouri and a past member of the Ivy Leaf Chapter of the OES of Pleasant Hill.
But of all the things Olive accomplished in her life, what she was the proudest of and loved the most was her family. Her legacy to them is love and it will always be remembered.
