LIFE-LONG RESIDENT SUCCUMBS AT AGE OF 73
Carried on Coal Business and Operated City Scales Following Husband's Death --Rites Saturday
Mrs. Clara C. Beard, 73, widow of Frederick O. Beard and virtually a life-long resident of Carthage, passed away at 10:15 o'clock last night at her home, 103 Meridian street.
The last two years Mrs. Beard had been in failing health. She submitted to a major operation a year ago but improved and was able to be up and around until the last three days prior to her death.
Since the death of her husband on October 13, 1925, Mrs. Beard had continued to operate the Beard Coal company and the city scales. She was born in Carthage February 24, 1873. Her parents Mr. and Mrs. John Hahnen, moved to Galena for a time after which they returned here. Mrs. Beard had been a resident of Carthage 69 years.
Surviving are four daughters, the Misses Pauline and Fern Beard of the home Mrs. John Harmsen of Carthage and Mrs. Watson Little of Kansas City; two sons, Harley Beard of east of Carthage and Harold Beard of Carthage; two brothers, John Hahnen of Carthage and Arthur Hahnen of Covina, Calif., and a sister, Mrs. Gussie Johnson of San Francisco, Calif. The daughter, Mrs. Little, has been here the last two weeks.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 o'clock Saturday afternoon at the Knell service home with the Rev. R. H. Bodine, pastor of the first Methodist church, in charge. Burial will be in Park cemetery.
