"MILBRIDGE - Foch C. "Uncle" Nichols, 74, died Sunday, Sept. 14, 2003, at a Bangor hospital. He was born July 21, 1929, in Calais, the son of Bion C. and Helen L. (Leighton) Nichols.
Foch graduated from Addison High School, Class of 1947, and worked at Bath Iron Works before the end of World War II. He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving in the U.S. Navy on the flight crew of the U.S.S. Wasp. Following his time in the Navy, Foch joined the Merchant Marines, working for Socony Mobil Oil Co. for 28 years. He retired from the Merchant Marines in 1985, and went to work for L. Ray Packing Co. in Milbridge until 2001. Foch was a member of American Legion Post No. 8 in Cherryfield. He was an avid sportsman and loved going to camp and being with his friends.
Foch is survived by his wife, Muriel (Cummings) Nichols of Milbridge; four children, Michael Nichols, Lynette Struble and her husband, Bob, Daisie Nichols, and Marguerite Ascoti, all of New York; six stepchildren; a sister, Faye Snider of Harrington; six grandchildren, Jenny, Beth, Ashley, Robert, Gina and Amity; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He was predeceased by a sister, Fern Black; and a brother, Clifford McQuarie.
Friends are invited to visit with the family 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at the Bragdon-Kelley-Campbell Funeral Home, 47 Main St., Milbridge, where funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Thursday with Owen Beal officiating. Committal services with military honors will follow at the Pine Grove Cemetery, Cherryfield. Gifts in memory of Foch may be sent to the American Legion Scholarship Fund, care of Allegra Willey, 218 Ridge Road, Cherryfield, Me 04462
