She was the daughter of Joseph Dickson and Sarah Epperson. Her father was a Captain in the Civil War for the Confederates. He died on the second day of fighting at the Battle of Shiloh, when May was 3 years old. May was married to Henry Exall and they had one son, Henry Jr.

As president of the Dallas Library Association, May headed the movement that built and opened a free public library in Dallas in 1901. She then served as president of the library's board of trustees.

She was the daughter of Joseph J. Dickson and his wife, Sarah S. Epperson. Joseph J. Dickson died on April 6, 1862 at the Battle of Shiloh, Tennessee while serving in the Confederate Army. Source: more)
