John W. Moragne Dies; Buried Sunday
Mr. Moragne was no doubt one of the oldest citizens of South Mississippi died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Ruth Jones, 903 Areledge Street, Hattiesburg, Sat., afternoon, July 28th and was buried in the Purvis cemetery Sunday afternoon at 4:00 o'clock. Nervices were conducted by Rev. Garland McInnis, and Mrs. Troy B. Holmes, associate pastor of the First Assembly of God church on Bernice Avenue, Hattiesburg.
Mr. Moragne moved with his family to Purvis about 1890 from Gadsden, Ala. He was a member of one of the most prominent and wealthly families in Alabama. He married Miss Fannie Smith of Gadsden about 1885. For a number of years he followed his trade as sawyer in various saw mills in South Mississippi, but also was a farmer and lived with his family east of Purvis for 15 or 20 years until he accepted the position as county jailer under the late Geo. W. Holleman. He also followed road building for a time and had charge of the county prisoners with whom he worked the public roads of the county.
Mr. Moragne always enjoyed good health until a few years before his death and when he died it is said he did not have a grey hair in his head.
The deceased is survived by Mrs. Ruth Jones of Hattiesburg, three sons, John and Hubbert Moragne of New Orleans and Clarence, of Texas.
Walden Funeral Home of Columbia was in charge of arrangements.
Pallbearers were Paul Andrews, Joe White, Joe Baucher, Leroy Carter, Kenneth Miller and R. L. Thrower, all of Hattiesburg.
