"Wyn" Nelson, 88, a 38-year resident of Colorado Springs, entered Paradise on July 9, 2008.
"Wyn" was born on March 22, 1920 to William Patrick and Mary Fahey Mahan in Highland Falls, NY. She married Daniel Jack Nelson on June 5, 1945 upon his graduation from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, NY, and committed the next 58 years to her husband until his passing on February 18, 2004.
For many of those years she was an Air Force wife and mother facing the challenges of frequent moves throughout the United States and overseas and raising their six children while Jack was often deployed.
In her spare time she earned a 25-year service award for volunteer work with the Red Cross. "Wyn" loved to play bingo at the Retired Enlisted Association with her many friends.
She is survived by her six children, Mary Ellen Spahr of Greeley, CO, Libby Singleton (Darrell), Daniel Nelson Jr., Trish Nelson, William Nelson and Terri Lujan (Rick), all of Colorado Springs; seven grandchildren, "DJ" Singleton, Ryan Singleton (Susan), Chris and Jena Spahr, Annette, Trey, and Reed Lujan; one great-grandson, Ean Singleton and great grand-daughter, Sydney Singleton.
Along with her husband, she was preceded in death by her sister Veronica Taylor, and a grandson, Ricky Lujan, Jr. "Wyn" has one surviving sister, Helen Durbin of St. Petersburg, FL.
Our family would like to express our heartfelt thanks to the doctoral and nursing staffs at Memorial Hospital. Your gallant efforts and compassion towards our mother did not go unnoticed. Thank you so much.
