Wiliam served as a Sergeant with the 208th Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, Company G (Civil War).

In 1860, he was a farmer living in Centre Township, Perry County, Pennsylvania, and stood 5' 6" tall with black hair and black eyes.
A Civil War veteran, he first enlisted and mustered in Harrisburg April 20, 1861, as a private with Co. D, 2nd Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company July 26, 1861. He also enlisted in Harrisburg August 31, 1864, mustered into federal service there September 5 as a sergeant with Co. G, 208th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company June 1, 1865.
Between enlistments, he married Phiana Catharine Bretz and fathered Olive Catharine (b. 04/20/65), William R. (b. @1868), Augusta E. (b./d. 1869), Juniata L. (b. @1869 [Augusta's twin?], John B. (b. 03/11/72), Mary E. (b. @1874), Allen L. (b. @1877), and Agnes F. (b. 04/18/79, d. 10/19/80).
