Joseph Snyder Bistline married Sarah Gutshall about 1859. Four daughters were born to this union; Anna Elizabeth,Florence, Elizabeth and Katherine May. (Kate May Kohlman died in Vancouver, British Columbia. Grave location unknown).

The son of Benjamin & Hannah (Snyder) Bistline, in 1860 he was a carpenter living in Jackson Township, Perry County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 8" tall and had black hair and brown eyes.
A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Harrisburg September 3, 1864, mustered into federal service there September 5 as a private with Co. F, 208th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company June 1, 1865.
