The son of Benjamin & Hannah (Snyder) Bistline, in 1860 he was a carpenter living in Jackson Township, Perry County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 8" tall and had black hair and brown eyes. He married Sarah Gutshall and fathered Anna E. (b. 03/09/61, d. 08/18/65), Elizabeth (b. 02/04/67, d. 10/26/76), Florence S. (b. ?), and Katie May (b. ? - filed for a minor's pension from Kansas).
A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Harrisburg September 3, 1864, mustered into federal service there September 5 as a private with Co. F, 208th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company June 1, 1865.
