JAMES L. CAMERON

PIONEER DAYS-HESPER TOWNSHIP 1851-1941

One of the early county surveyors of Winneshiek county was James L. Cameron. Born in the Highlands of Scotland, September 10, 1832, he came to America with his parents and two brothers, John and Robert in 1835. They first settled in Lockport, New York, and then in Ontario, Canada, coming hence to Dane County, Wisconsin. Here he became a member the the first Republican club organized in Madison, Wisconsin, in 1856. Two years later he came to Hesper. In 1859 he married Cynthia Worth. They were parents of seven children. In the year 1861 he enlisted in Co. K. 38th Iowa Vounteers through the war of rebellion. His wife enlisted later as a hospital nurse, at Jefferson Barracks, Mo., where he was stationed. She died in 1874. He was taught civil engineering and surveying by his father, who was a graduate of Aberdeen University, of Scotland. He was elected county surveyor in 1875 and held that office for twenty-two years. He also owned a farm in Section 14, Hesper township just south of the present village, now the farm of C. A. Smith. He was one of the early school teachers of Winneshiek county. In 1877 he married Mrs. Mary E. Johnson, widow of Lieutenant William Johnson, of the 38th Iowa Infantry. He was stricken with paralysis and passed away at Hesper, July 16, 1900.
