Birth: Oct. 7, 1818
Death: Aug. 2, 1858

Son of Thomas & Patience Tuttle Bates / Husband of Evaline Matilda Simpson / THOMAS SHELBY BATES died 2 August 1858 in Monticello, age 39 years, 9 months and 24 days old. The death record states he was married, a farmer and a tanner and was born and resided in Elk Springs, son of Thomas and Patience Tuttle Bates.

Dr. Jonathan S. Frisbie's report: Mr. Bates came into town (Monticello) at an early hour on the day of Elections. He did not vote until late in the day. After voting he walked out of the Courthouse some 15 or 20 paces falling over on his face in a state of insensibility and expired in a few
minutes. A fight was going on at the time in the street and he was walking in that direction - had about reached the crowd when he fell - then a rock was throwed and shots from a pistal fired saying the inhabitants. He was
struck with a rock or shot or felled by some other cause yet to be developed. The physician now of the opinion that he had been struck by some hard substance on the head. The deceased was a sober peaceable citizen (Wayne Co, KY Marriages and Vital Records, Vol 2:345-346)
