Rites set today for plane crash victim.
A funeral will be held today in Portland for Howard George Jacobsen, formerly of Cottage Grove, and the founder-owner of Pacific Saw and Knife Co., Portland. Jacobsen died in Southern California when his twin-engine airplane crashed in the San Bernadino mountains on Jan. 7. The plane was found last Sunday.
Jacobsen was 62. Two passengers, Dr. Henry L. Schumacher, an optometrist, former Washington state senator and former mayor of Vancouver, Wash., and Andrew Toyly, a salesman for Pacific Saw and Knife Co., were also killed.
Jacobsen was born and raised in Cottage Grove. He graduated from Cottage Grove High School in 1930 and worked in Portland as a salesman for Atkins Saw Co. until he founded Pacific Saw and Knife Co. in 1954. The business grew to include a branch in Atlanta, Ga. and one in Eureka, Calif.
He is survived by his wife, also formerly of Cottage Grove, Donna Mae Bartell Jacobsen, Portland; a son, George Jacobsen, Portland; a daughter Ann Reeves, Honolulu, Hawaii; his mother, Hansine Jacobsen, Cottage Grove; two sisters, Elsie Ward, Cottage Grove, and Betty Wilson, Lake Oswego; one grandchild.
In lieu of flowers, the family asked that donations be made to the Shriner's Hospital for Crippled Children, Portland. The funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. today at the Skyline Memorial Funeral Home, Portland, with private burial following in Skyline Memorial Gardens, Portland.
