Jackson--J. Frank Caldwell, 69 years old, who had served 16 years as an elective county official, died at his home here late Monday night of paralysis. His death followed a third stroke of paralysis suffered Oct. 28.
Definite funeral arrangements have not been made, pending the arrival of some of the children.
Mr. Caldwell, who served two terms each as county assessor and county collector, was first stricken with paralysis on Feb. 27, but regained his health sufficiently to resume his insurance work. He suffered a second attack Aug. 18, but again rallied, and was in favorable health until the last stroke two weeks ago, which occurred as he was waling by the courthouse.
James Franklin Caldwell was born near Hog Creek in Bollinger County, the son of Judge and Mrs. J.F. Caldwell, and was the last member of this once large family. He was educated in the schools of his native county, and while young began to teach school in his native county and later came to Cape Girardeau County, where he taught several rural schools. On June 23, 1889, he was married to Lydia Schlueter, who, together with nine children, survives him. The sons are Andrew, Clarence and Frank, of Tulsa, Okla., and Alban, of Washington, D.C.; and the daughters are Mrs. Robert Lear of Eldorado, Kan., Mrs. Ruby Harris, Mrs. Bernice Cochran and Mrs. Irene Kuenzel of St. Louis, and Miss Helen Caldwell, who is teaching school in Mountain View, Mo. There are also nine grandchildren.
In 1900 he was elected assessor Cape Girardeau County and served from 1901 to 1904, was re-elected for another four year term and served until the end of the year 1908. In 1910 he was elected collecor of the the revenue, served four years, was re-elected in 1914 and served another four year term, ending with the year 1918. During that time he was regarded as a strong party leader, and staunch Republican. He was a member of the McKendree Methodist Church, where the funeral rites will be held.
